Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Half Marathon | 10k | 5K 2/4/2024 - Before Run

This Sunday, February 4, 2024 will mark my 13th Kaiser running event since 2005. My first run in this event was a 5k, or 3.1 mile run. Off and on, I've ran the 1/2 marathon, 10k, as well as 5k. I'm reflecting on how much time and energy I've put in to running in this annual event.  I started running in my early 30s, back then I couldn't afford a gym membership, however, I lived near a lake, so with an adequate running shoes, I started doing brisk runs along the lake. Lake Merced 's running parameter was about 5 miles, so over time, I managed to run the entire parameter with some ease. As I became more engaged in running, I would at times train to run 2-3 times around the lake non stop. It was quite liberating, and darn healthy. However, as I got older, my running results were lagging due to less focused training and just going at a slower pace.  When I did my first 5k, I was able to finish in less than 30 minutes, it was amazing, about less than 9 minutes a mile!  ...

~ My 1st Running Event of the Year! 2014 Kaiser Permanente San Francisco 5K ~

Every year, I take the time to include this run - sort of a kick off to start the new year intent on continuing to be in good health and personal motivation. But I'm such a slow runner these days. It could be that this year's run was raining. It hasn't happened in a while but I can't use weather as an excuse. I've ran in the rain before minus thousands of people crowded around me. To kick off the year, my time was really slow on this particular run. In year's past, I've run this same running event a few half marathons or relegate to the 5K just in case I may not finish. This event is usually a springboard to my other runs into the new year. This year however, I'm considering finishing a half marathon to celebrate my ability to do it and with a good finishing time. In the case of running full marathons in the past, I finish a full, then I'm done, there's no zip to my step and I can't go anywhere but hop into bed and nap that afternoo...

Kaiser Permanente 5K Fun Run 2011 - A new running community

As far as I can remember, I've been running in this event for oh, off and on more than 10 years. I ran in both 5K and the Half. This year, I thought I ease into a 5K. It was one of my first runs I participated in when I first moved to San Francisco. Today was no exception in terms of the attendance, but the weather was ideal. Forecasters expected temperature to reach a high of 70 in the City. Mark, my partner told me to remember to have fun and I did. But it dawned on me how the people who today participates in this event or any running event in the new decade. I lined my self up in the 5K group at the start line and noticed to my left, right and practically everyone around me had either a a smart phone, cell phone, ear plugs to music, etc in total use. Oblivious to what really was around them. I started noticing this a little in the last few runs I've done but today, everyone was in total disconnection. The reason why I'm bringing this up is that I was so much in a good mo...
